Born in Sompuis, Champagne, Pierre-Paul Royer-Collard, during the revolution of 1789, was a member of the Paris Commune (until August 10, 1792), then served as a deputy to the Council of Five Hundred. From 1797 to 1803, he was part of a secret royalist council and an advocate of a constitutional monarchy. in the Chamber of Deputies, he was, after 1816, leader of the "doctrinaire" faction. An adversary of the ideologues, he developed a spiritualist philosophy that would influence victor cousin. Royer-Collard was elected to the ACADÉMIE FRANÇAISE in 1827.
